5 Reasons You Aren't Losing Weight- (they aren't the reasons you may think)

If there is a safe eating plan out there I’ve done it!  I think I should have a plaque on the wall in my office underneath my other certifications that says, “Certified Diet Diva.” Seriously, I’ve done them all in my short 35 years.  I have struggled with my weight since the age of 2.  I went on all the low fat diets with my mom (who was also very overweight), we did the cabbage soup diet as a family when I was around 10, Atkins when I was 12, Weight Watchers more than a few times, Trim Healthy Mama, Paleo, more recently I’ve dabbled with the Ketogenic Diet.  You name it, I’ve tried it!  After being on steroids like Prednisone from age 2 to 25 the weight had literally PILED on.  I was miserable and sick.  Finally, I met with a sweet Naturopath who put me on the right path toward wellness naturally and I lost about 100 lbs in  about 3 years.  During that time I wasn’t focused on weight loss as much as I was on feeling well.  For literally the first time in my life I was able to run!  Not just down the street, but miles and miles and miles.  Those miles represented freedom.  Freedom from all the illness I had carried for so many years. Freedom from all the medicine that had more side effects than benefits.  Freedom to be the person that had always felt hidden inside my sickness.

Fast forward to when I was 28 and was carrying my first little girl.  The weight just started piling back on!  It was insane how fast I was gaining, considering I was throwing up 5 to 7 times or more each day all through my pregnancy.  By the time I delivered her I had gained 64 pounds.  I came home from the hospital and jumped on the scale expecting to see a dramatic drop only to find that I was still at the same weight I was when I went into the hospital.  What was going on!?!  I proceeded to gain more weight and I remember the tearful day when I got on the scale, when my baby was 6 weeks old, to find that not only had I not lost weight, I had gained an additional 12 pounds…and I was nursing, folks!  It didn’t make sense.  Frustration doesn’t even begin to describe my situation. The harder I worked toward weight loss, the more I gained.  Oh, I’d lose a few pounds here and there, but the extreme diligence it took to budge that scale was frightening.  I’ll never forget getting on the scale after a violent stomach bug that lasted three days to find that I had gained 4 pounds.  When I got pregnant 10 months after my oldest was born I was at my highest weight up to that point.  Then 8 months after my second baby was born I got pregnant again.  So three babies in 3 years and over 100 pounds weight gain!

Why am I telling you all of this?  I’m telling you all of this to say, I understand–more than anyone–what it means to STRUGGLE with weight loss.  To not feel comfortable in your own skin.  To see others loose weight with mediocre effort.  To have a super skinny husband who struggles to keep weight ON!  In my journey (a journey I’m still on) I have found the following 5 things to be my biggest reasons for why the weight doesn’t come off!

  1. Underestimating the power of STRESS! –  Stress is a HUGE factor in our weight loss struggles.  Stress is unavoidable in our day and age!  There is little we can do about some of the stressors in life.  There are some things we can do to help our bodies respond a little better to those stressors.
  2. Underestimating the Power of REST –  I literally haven’t slept well for the last 8 years!  When I lost all that weight years ago, my Naturopath put me on a strict sleeping pattern.  I went to bet at 9pm and woke up at 5:30am.  I remember being mid conversation with my room mate noticing the clock had reached 9 and I would abruptly say, “Can we pick the up later, I’ve got to go to bed!”  Having babies has taken away the power to control my sleep, but I have noticed that when I get sleep, my body rewards me with losses, albeit smaller ones than I would like. Recently I have had to focus a little more on quality of sleep as opposed to quantity.  There are lots of ways to improve the quality of your sleep.
  3. Underestimating the Power of HORMONES! –  I could write a blog all by itself on this one.  For women, our hormones are a powerful force!  Improperly balanced hormones can lead to a multitude of weight gain woes!  Balancing hormones takes TIME!  It doesn’t happen overnight!
  4. Underestimating the Power of SUGAR! –  Studies show that sugar is 10 times more addictive than cocaine!  Cocaine!   WHAT?!  We have all done it, we have been following a strict eating plan and then we decide to cheat, “just this once” for a birthday or a party!  What happens!  The sugar dragon rears its ugly head and our cravings take over until we get fed up and start year another diet plan!
  5. Underestimating the Power of EXPECTATIONS –  I am a GOAL setter!  I love to set a goal and CRUSH it!  Post babies, I’d set goals like, by the baby’s first birthday I will be at my goal weight.  I put too much emphasis on the scale, and not enough emphasis on the goal of wellness.  When I didn’t see the scale move depression would set in and I wanted to throw my hands up and give in to the food comforts of my past!

Maybe your are struggling like I am with weight loss. It is such a difficult journey in so many ways.  If you are interested in learning more about how to balance these areas, call Natural Options to make an appointment.  I would love to help you by teaching you some of the things I have been learning as I have researched ways to help the body in these 5 areas.  I’m still on my journey and have a lot of weight to lose myself, but I’m committed for the long haul. One day at a time.  One hour at a time.  To be healthier tomorrow than I am today!

Wishing you, too, a healthier tomorrow!

Saturdays at Natural Options

I love coming to work at Natural Options on cold Saturday mornings! After a good and healthy breakfast I head down to Natural Options.  As I open the door and walk into the warmth of a quiet store, I see the shadows of everything I love to talk about and use for my family neatly sitting on the shelf (thanks to Sally who keeps our store super organized). I turn the lights on and get my favorite music going, (while I write today I’m listening to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas “), put some water in the teapot to make a nice cup of tea, and start on my tasks for the day. Sometimes that may be cleaning a bathroom, vacuuming the store, or sweeping the sidewalk while saying “Good morning” to other Olde Towne employees getting ready for their day. When I come to work on Saturday, what I look forward to the most is the relationships I might be able to build with the great people of Grove City. This really is a great little town. When I first came to Grove City almost 8 years ago, I hardly knew anybody. Thanks, in part to Natural Options, I have had the opportunity to get to know many wonderful people. People who have struggled with anxiety or winter sadness that come in regularly to Natural Options to pick up Calm Day or Mood Lift or some other supplement that has helped them in the past. Sometimes clients come by that have struggled with heartburn or other digestive issues and I recommend to them GI Complete or DigestZen. I have to say my favorite people are the elderly folks who come in to get some X-Flame or Tart Cherry Juice to help with their joint pain. As people come in on Saturday mornings, it is different than any other day at Natural Options. This morning I got to talk to a sweet lady who is battling Lyme and share what I have done for myself to feel so much better! Our Saturday morning crowd is ready to share their hearts and I love to learn from them. Not so much are we learning lessons about supplements from them (although I have a few customers teach me a thing or two) but life lessons. Lessons about how I want to be moving and active when I’m 88 years old. Some of these customers have more energy than I do and they attribute that health to wise food choices, supplements, and the grace of God. I learn lessons about how they’ve worked through the loss of a loved one, or battled depression, or helped a family member through a hard time. I’ve learned about hard work and perseverance from these folks. I’ve received lessons about cheerfulness in the midst of difficult circumstances from people who have lost more than I can even imagine.

So, while I may not always want to leave my family at home on a Saturday morning and I may never become a millionaire working at Natural Options, I certainly do love my job and I love the people that come in on these cold Saturday mornings. You should come by, you never know what little lesson you might just learn!

Christmas Gift Ideas

Well, it’s that time of year again!  I can’t believe December is here already and it will come and go just like that.  That’s why I am going to grab your attention before it is too late!

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays of the year.  I get to see a bunch of family that live out of town, bake cookies all day, watch Christmas movies by the fireside, and of course get presents!  Come on, you were all thinking it.  I have certain people in my life that I always get stumped on in terms of presents and I am sure most of you can relate.  What about getting them something healthy this season?  Healthy doesn’t have to be boring at all!   When I look for Christmas gifts I try to find gifts that people can use everyday!  If you have been into our store, you know that we have a wonderful Bath & Body Bar that has handmade soaps, bath salts, bath bombs, and lots of fun accessories to make your bath extra special.  I personally love the handmade soaps.  I use the Spearmint Soap in my shower everyday and I will never go back.  It just makes the bathroom smell so good! This Christmas season we have fun holidays scents such as Candy Cane, Mistletoe, Cranberry Spice, & many more!

Have you ever considered creating a gift basket with all these fun gifts inside? You could even add in a Massage Gift Certificate to make it extra special!

Maybe you have a hard time finding the right gift for each member of your family.  I’m here to help you out!  I have a sister who loves soaps and bath accessories but she would also love festive popcorn, organic candy canes, or organic hot cocoa and all-natural mini marshmallows.

Your mom might go for something like Mrs. Meyers holidays soaps and all-purpose cleaners.  Trust me, your mom won’t stop cleaning the house with these.  Mrs. Meyers offers holidays scents such as Orange Clove, Iowa Pine, Cranberry and Peppermint!

Now, dads can always be a bit tricky.  My dad is a sucker for chocolate and snacks (I mean he’s always munching on something).  So how about some munchies for dad!

Or how about a bar of chocolate with a gift certificate for a massage? I know my dad would love that!

We also have some gifts that would be good for anyone!  We have great diffusers, fun holiday teas, himalayan salt lamps and pretty glass water bottles.  Along with the diffusers we have many essential oils to choose from including our new Dr. Mercola oils as well as NOW and doTERRA oils.  A diffuser and some essential oils would make the perfect gift basket!  Not only do we have wonderful gift options but here are my favorite picks for stocking stuffers!

Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be stressful! We wanted to help you out this Christmas with some great ideas so we hope you take advantage of this and stop on into our store to pick up the perfect gift before it is too late!

Gut & Psychology!

I just love days like this!  My kitchen is cleaned up, the laundry is whirring away in the dryer, the kids are at school, and I have time to curl up in my yoga pants on my couch with a cup of tea to write.  What makes it even better is that it is cold and raining outside making my couch at home the only place I want to be right now. So today, I want to share with you some of the things that I’ve been learning as I seek to provide a happy and healthy environment for my family.

Almost every time I am working in the store, I have questions like, “What can I do about my anxiety!  I am SO stressed out!  I can’t fall asleep at night because I keep thinking and thinking and my mind just WON’T STOP.”  Even worse for me is when I have a parent or spouse telling me, in tears, about a loved one that is battling depression.  My heart goes out to each and every one of you that is fighting the battle of anxiety or depression.  I have been there!  I truly do understand.  I personally struggled with anxiety and depression following the birth of my second child.  I have also watched as someone close to me struggled so deeply that words cannot even begin to express the heartache of watching them and, at the time, not knowing what I could possibly do to help them.  Why, you might ask, are so many people battling depression and anxiety?  It seems that we hear about this often!  First of all, let’s talk about the different kinds of depression and anxiety. There is depression and anxiety that is brought on by a particular situation.  Maybe the death of a loved one or the loss of a job.  Maybe it is living with someone who is battling cancer or some other chronic disease or even getting a diagnosis of a life altering illness.  Maybe anxiety is brought on by being plain old too busy!  Those are situations that might be temporary or situational.  Then there is clinical depression and anxiety as well as postpartum depression and anxiety.  I put those together because I believe those can be addressed similarly from a holistic perspective.

We have all experienced butterflies in our stomachs before an interview or speech, right?  Or that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you think you forgot to turn the iron off before leaving for work. Why does that happen?  Scientist have referred to our gut as our “second brain” because there are around 30 neuro receptors in our digestive system, particularly in the small intestine. Between 80% and 90% of serotonin, the “feel good” hormone is produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Serotonin is responsible for maintaining mood balance and when we become deficient in serotonin, depression often occurs. Did you know that serotonin even plays a role in bowel function?  When you eat something toxic, more serotonin is produced to help your body rid itself of that toxin through diarrhea!  Who knew that something that can make you feel SO good can also make you feel SO bad!  The reverse side of that is when we don’t produce enough serotonin therefore we can have issues like constipation and hard stool.

If our digestive system  plays such a big role in our Serotonin production and regulation, how else might repairing our digestive system affect our mood and ability to function without problems like depression and anxiety?  How do we create a friendly environment for the proper production and regulation of serotonin and other feel good hormones? How do we make sure that our bodies are equipped to handle situational anxiety and depression adequately? Well, I’d love to answer these questions in this blog, but the clothes in the dryer are ready to be folded and my kids and husband would probably like some dinner so my time for writing is up today!  I will write more on another rainy day and I will do all I can to answer those questions for you.  If you want to hear an entire presentation on the relationship between Gut Health and Psychological Health then come on out to Natural Options on Thursday evening! We will have hot tea, some yummy flavored bone broth, and some great conversation answering all these questions about your Gut Health!  AND we will offer 15% off all GUT related supplements!  There MAY even been some FREE prizes!  Call Natural Options to save your space!

Fighting Fall Germs!

Now that it is finally fall and we are all crazed over pumpkin spice EVERYTHING, why not be crazed about supporting our immune system?!  Germs are everywhere, there is nothing that we can do about it!  Wait a minute, yes there is!  Our immune system plays a big role in how well our bodies fight off infection.

On the whole, our immune systems do a pretty decent job at fighting off disease-causing organisms.  Unfortunately stress, constant exposure to germs, poor diet and lack of sleep can cause your immune system to take a day or two off.  The good news is that you don’t have to get sick!  To function well, your immune system needs balance and harmony.  Adopting healthy living strategies is your first line of defense.  Imagine you are playing the game of football.  You want to win the game right?  You need to make sure you are providing your body with the right defense.  This means eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low saturated fats.  It can be easy in the winter to just cuddle up with a warm blanket and binge watch Netflix!  When we exercise regularly  every one of our body systems function better, including the immune system.   The next one is for all you mom’s out there!  Kids who get more sleep will have stronger immune systems and can fight off more bacteria that they may encounter at school.   You want to make sure you are providing your body with the right support.  One of our staff’s favorite daily immune support supplements is Immunomax II but we have lots of great options for you to try!
Supplements to support your immune system are not one size fits all, there are lots of different options.  You can try using essential oils, elderberry juice, or Traditional Medicinals Seasonal Sampler containing Gypsy Cold Care, Echinacea Plus, Throat Coat, and Breathe Easy are all great for building your immune system.  Our immune systems need to be strengthened in the right way to help our bodies defend themselves.  Oh and a little pumpkin spice never hurt anybody, treat yourself this fall season!

Healthy Aging

Aging is a part of all of us and there is nothing that we can do about it.  However, there are ways that we can be healthy in our aging process.  There are certain steps that can be taken to reduce the effects of aging in terms of wrinkles, poor skin, hormone balance, a weaker immune system, memory and energy function. Three important steps can be used to reduce these effects such as keeping a healthy diet, supplementation, and always exercising.  By implementing these three steps into your daily life you can reduce the aging effects on your body.  But what else can you do?

There are three different theories when it comes to aging.  The first theory is Programmed Senescence which is known to be the belief that aging refers to genes switching on and off sequentially.  Also, it can mean that age-associated deficits make their way to the surface thus causing wrinkles and poor skin.  Damage theories encompass Programmed Senescence which explains aging as a result of environmental insults to the organism.  More specifically this means there is a wear & tear of cells and tissues, free radical damage, genetic mutation, and the “rate of living”.  DNA damage plays a large role in aging as well as free radical damage.  It is important to reduce environmental and dietary exposure to free radicals.  These things include the use of tobacco, exposure of pesticides, petroleum based products, alcohol, fried foods, and barbecued foods. The second theory is the Endocrine theory which holds that our biological clocks control  aging through hormone release.  Aging can affect our hormones and they can become imbalanced.  The third theory is the Immunological theory that emphasizes the declining role of the immune system as leading to the vulnerability to infections, aging, and death.  Our immune systems are a large part of our bodies and the exposure to increased vulnerability with infections comes with aging.  Therefore, it is important that we keep our immune systems healthy by following the three important steps that I mentioned above.  So it makes sense that most of you have or will have an exercise routine and will try to provide a healthy diet for yourself.  In terms of supplementation we have a few suggestions for you-

  1. Endocrine Tincture- this will support your endocrine organs and balance hormone production
  2. Rad Free- this will manage free radical damage in terms of allergies, immune health, and energy production
  3. Pro Colors- specifically Pro Purples will support Healthy Aging by giving you more antioxidants
  4. Super Shake- this is a protein powder designed for a cleanse or an elimination-challenge diet as well as giving you fiber
  5. Fantastic 5- supports brain, heart, digestive health, and daily maintenance of main body systems

Aging happens to all of us.  However, naturally supporting your body from the effects of aging is a good method to have as opposed to harmful alternatives.  But make sure you are keeping to a healthy diet! This means that you are keeping your fruits and veggies in your diet (as much as you might not want to).  They are extremely good for you!

Stress No More!

Stress can cause funky things to happen to our bodies.  Especially this time of the year, everybody is getting ready to go back to school and that brings a lot of stress into our lives.  If you are a busy mom with kids then you know exactly what I mean.  Stress can contribute to many health problems such as blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, or even a change in your regular diet.  Stress is a natural reaction.  Have you ever felt your heart pounding during a scary movie?  Then you know you are feeling stress in your body and your mind.  Some people probably don’t even realize that.  Your body has a natural alarm system or a “fight or flight” response.  How many of you get stressed when paying bills every month?  I’m sure most of you would say yes.  The underlying message here is that stress can cause us to age quicker.

How many of you have heard of Dr. Axe?  Dr. Axe is focused on teaching people to be really healthy through the products that he offers.  Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies.  It is found in our muscles, bones, skin, and tendons.  It is essentially the “glue” that holds everything together.  As we age, our collagen production tends to slow down.  Taking a collagen protein can help you in 7 different ways with the aging process.  It can help your skin and hair.  A lot of people wrinkle as they get older, it is just a part of life.  Increasing collagen levels can increase smoothness and firmness in your skin.  Not only that, but it can strengthen your nails and teeth!  Joints can benefit from collagen proteins because tendons and ligaments tend to lose their ability to move easily over time and with reduced collagen.  Leaky gut is a big one.  If you have problems with your digestive tract, collagen can help to soothe the gut’s lining and heal damaged cell walls.  Leaky gut repair would be something that would be helpful for you to take if this is something you deal with on a daily basis.  Collagen can boost your metabolism and energy levels.  If you tend to feel sluggish and fatigued maybe your collagen levels need to be increased.  If you are looking to detox then collagen proteins would be something to invest in trying.  Most importantly, in terms of aging, collagen proteins can help to reduce cellulite and stress marks on your body.  Your skin becomes thinner as you age and who wants that?  Not me.
I am hoping that this sparked some interest for some of you out there.  Collagen proteins can really benefit you in terms of healthy aging.  Stress creates a burden for us in the process of healthy aging.  The key here is combat stress with knowledge and willpower.  Who’s ready to conquer this?

Are you Choosing Good Fat Solutions in your Diet?

Do you find yourself fatigued, having mood swings, joint discomfort, or heart problems?  Maybe your body needs some more fat?  What? I thought I was supposed to consume as little fat as possible? You might say. The thing to remember is that there are good fats and bad fats. One of those good fats, are Omega 3 fatty acids.  Omega 3 is one of our most important essential nutrients.  There are 3 common types of Omegas, EPA, DHA, and ALA.  But why do I need them?  EPA and DHA are two converted types of Omega 3 fatty acids and they each have benefits.  EPA helps to regulate behavior and mood whereas DHA helps in pre and post natal health of both the mother and the child specifically with brain development and immunity.  EPA and DHA are a dynamic duo and have increased benefits when consumed together.  The main benefits include slowing the progression of age-related memory loss, supporting memory in terms of focus and attention, and promoting positive mood and well-being.  On the other hand, there is ALA.  ALA is a plant based precursor to other types of Omega 3’s.  Flaxseed, chia, and hemp offer ALA which is converted by the body into DHA and EPA.  So why is all of this important?  One of the BEST benefits of Omegas is that they reduce the risk of heart attacks and normalize cholesterol triglyceride levels.  Even Medical Journals like Journal of American Medical Association, suggest that taking 2 grams of Omega 3’s a day for three months reduces incidents of heart attacks by up to 90%.  Keeping both DHA and EPA in your diet can help your body to respond better to its many stressors.

There are four categories of good fats:

  1. Monounsaturated Fat- avocados, olives, nuts, & natural peanut butter
  2. Polyunsaturated Fat- walnuts, flaxseed, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, & fatty fish (Salmon, Tuna, Trout, and Sardines)
  3. Fish- Best Source of Omega 3– Wild Salmon, Herring, Mackerel, Oysters, Sardines, Lake Trout, or Anchovies
  4. Vegetarian Sources- algae (seaweed), brussel sprouts, kale, spinach, or parsley

You might ask, why can’t I just get my Omega’s and good fats through my food?  If you are dealing with chronic inflammation or some kind of auto immune issue, you need around 2,000 mg of Omega 3’s each day! One serving of cooked Salmon only gives you around 500 mg of Omega 3’s. So unless you want to cook and eat around 4 servings per day, it would be hard to get what your body really needs.  Plus, who wants their house to smell like fish all the time?!  Supplementation can be a great way to get some of the nutrients that are harder to get from our foods.  We have lots of great options at our store!  Come see us!

Do you suffer from Migraines frequently?

Migraines can be very painful for some people and can occur quite often.  Are you someone that might be experiencing this?  Migraines can come and go in different ways and strengths.  It is important to know what you can do to eliminate the amount of migraines or pain that you are experiencing.

But first, I would like to walk you through what a migraine is and what it is doing to your body.  A migraine is a severe, painful headache that can be followed by or accompanied with sensory warnings.  To be more specific, sensory warnings can be considered as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sounds.  Not only that, but migraines can be brought on by skipping meals, dehydration, alcohol, hormonal triggers, and change in sleep patterns.  So what are they doing to your body?  Migraines have to do with the expansion of blood vessels as a result of some other event.  With that said, the expansion of these blood vessels is coming from an excitation of a nerve responsible for the sensation in the face.  Migraines affect many people all over the world.  The pain can last for hours even up to days.  There are no cures for migraines, unfortunately.  However, to look on the bright side, there are things that we can do in our lives that can eliminate them from occurring.  Most people find that if they alter their lifestyle in certain ways they have had fewer migraines.  We recommend a few things to decrease and eliminate migraines from your life

  1. Get enough sleep
  2. Reduce the amount of stress in your life
  3. Drink plenty of water
  4. Avoid certain foods
  5. Exercise regularly!!

MigreLief is something that can be beneficial to you.  MigreLief is a natural migraine relief supplement.  This supplement is formulated to relieve the symptoms of migraines by keeping the blood flowing properly in the brain.  That makes sense to everyone, right?  When we experience migraines our blood vessels expand and blood doesn’t flow properly.  This supplement can help to keep the blood flowing properly.  There are three different types of MigreLief supplement, the Original formula, the Fast-Acting formula, and the Menstrual formula.  Not only are you controlling your migraines but you are getting other health benefits also!
