Health Food Trends

Trends come and go.  Ask your parents and they will most likely tell you what has come and gone throughout the years that they have lived.  Just like clothes and shoes, health food trends come and go.  At Natural Options we strive to provide you with healthy options because that is our main focus as being a health & wellness center.

Health conscious eaters have been getting serious in the past year about what they put into their bodies.  I am going to go through the top healthy foods of 2016 right here, right now!  Chia seeds are probably something that you have heard of before.  If you grew up in the 90’s you would remember “Chia Pets”.  There you go see how trends come and go, now I feel old.  In all seriousness, chia seeds deliver as much protein as nuts as well as heart healthy ALA, and plant based Omega-3 fat.  Chia seeds absorb liquids really easily making a creamy addition to oatmeal, smoothies, or pancakes.  Plus, chia seeds are perfect for people with sensitive stomachs because they can be digested really easily compared to flax seeds.  Coconut flour is another one of those new and popular additions that people can add to their baked goods.  Coconut flour is a decadent addition but it is also very healthy!  There are 5 grams of fiber per 2 tablespoons and it is gluten-free!  It can also be beneficial for those with diabetes because it lowers your glycemic index.  Hemp seeds are somewhat similar to chia seeds in that they are a super-healthy seed.  They can be eaten raw, toasted, or sprinkled on yogurt or salads.  They can boast 16% of your daily value of phosphorous and magnesium.  Now onto something a little more exciting, well if you’re a tea enthusiast.  Who likes to drink tea?  I would answer yes to that question for sure! How about drinking tea that could actually help and protect your heart.  Rooibos tea is type of tea that can also raise your good cholesterol levels as well as tasting really good.  Not a bad deal, right?  Almond milk is becoming very popular as well as more and more people are becoming lactose intolerant.  Almond milk is really high in calcium and has 20-30% of your daily recommendation of calcium.  It contains high levels of Vitamin D and has fewer calories than cow’s milk.  Plus, it tastes really yummy in cereal or baked goods!  And then there’s kale!  Kale is one of the healthiest vegetables around.  Kale can provide you with cholesterol lowering benefits whether you steam it or not!  Kale is a good source of fiber as well as providing support to the body’s detoxification system.  Most people eat kale raw in salads, steam it, or broil it in the oven for about 4 minutes to create crispy & healthy chips!

As you can see, health food trends are booming right now and people are going crazy over the next and best food item on the market!  We have many of these products in store so if something caught your eye, stop on in to learn more or to pick up a bag for yourself!

Inflammation No More!

Do you have pain, swelling, or inflammation?  It can be common for someone to say that they have problems because of a trauma or an injury.  But inflammation can be because of arthritis, heart disease, autoimmune disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.  So what can we do to help you?

Nutritional Frontiers has many products that could be your solution.  X-Flame is an unique formula with patented ingredients to reduce pain and swelling, increase mobility, and modulate immune function.  These can decrease the need for over-the-counter pain medication.  However, this is not recommended as a substitution for taking Advil or Motrin.  It contains many ingredients that are specifically associated with supporting conditions of inflammation.  X-Flame comes in capsules as well as powder form.  In-Flam is another product that can help with inflammation.  Do you have stress because of inflammation and pain?  In-Flam could be the right one for you because it contains Holy Basil and it can increase the body’s resistance to stress.  Inflammation can be acute or chronic it all depends on your body.  Now if you need something that works stronger and much faster then you should try Inflammation Tinctures.  Tinctures are a liquid that you can add it to water, juice, or iced tea to get your dosage.  It has the same effects as the X-Flame & In-Flam but it can absorb into your body much quicker than a capsule because it is a liquid.  If you have severe pain then this product will work best for you!  These are all unique  formulas with patented ingredients to make you feel better.

We all suffer from pain and inflammation at some point in our lives.  It is time for you to feel better, don’t you think so?  Consider trying these products in your journey to wellness!

Heart Health, Is Fat Bad For You?

February is a month where we think of love and happy times.  Heart designs fill the ads and store displays for Valentine’s Day.  Because of all the cupids around pointing arrows at hearts busting with love, February has also become Healthy Heart awareness month.  Doesn’t that sound nice; a healthy heart.  That’s what we all want.  We want to live a long life with no inconvenience of ailments.

When most people think of heart disease and heart attacks, what is the first thing that comes to mind?  Do you have an answer?  I bet the majority of you think of cholesterol. That’s what we have been taught through various emotionally charged ads about controlling cholesterol:  “Do you know your number”?  Those ads have been around and around…then you see the pharmaceutical drug name and listen to a rushed, hushed voice about the side-effects including death!   Of course they do show happy, skinny people in those ads that make us want to be like them.  Is that really the case?   Why has heart disease been steadily climbing in America?  If it is due to a deficiency of statin drugs, why is it still going up while more and more people are on those medications?  Then of course there may be side-effects that could require you to be on yet another medication, and the cycle goes on and on.

Those ads also state how those skinny happy people already tried diet and exercise.  Of course the diet they were on was full of low-fat, sugar laden products that are called “food” yet look or taste nothing like our grandparents would’ve eaten back when heart disease was scarcely heard of.  Somehow we are missing the mark.

Man, has not changed in the past 100 years.  Our body still works the same as it did then.  Of course what we feed it for fuel has changed drastically.  Gone are most of the family farms and gardens which has been replaced by commercially grown food available year round.  Food looks better and is more appealing to the eye, but nutritionally is void of many nutrients that it was created to have.  Instead of food, we are eating a lot of chemicals and laboratory synthesized “vitamins” that our body doesn’t like or can’t fully metabolize it.

America has been taught that fat in our diet is bad.  Have you stopped to think about how your great grandmother and grandfather ate?  I know my grandparents were very healthy and lived to a ripe old age with little sickness.  There was no margarine, hydrogenated oils or low-fat, lean meat.  Of course most of the farm raised meat grazed on the green grass and hay, naturally making it leaner instead of being gorged with grains and hormones for bigger beef.  Good, natural fat is not our enemy!  God created us to use it and get nutrients from it.  What He didn’t create was all the chemicals, hormones and pesticides that get into animal fat whether it’s marbled in the meat or in the milk.  Those toxins are what is harmful to our bodies, not the fat itself.  We do have choices of what to eat.  Do you know where the meat for your dinner tonight came from?   Organic or local choices are far superior.

We focus so much attention on the fat content and don’t think about what manufactures have put foods to replace that fat.   One is chemicals that mimic fat, but are toxic to our bodies; the other is lots of sugar or high fructose corn syrup!  From my study of the human body and how it functions, I truly believe heart disease is a nutritionally deficient state that revolves around sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates in the diet, not fat.

Eating refined white sugar or white processed foods like bread, pasta, etc. on a regular basis sets up a cycle within the body that increases inflammation and the end result also works the heart harder inducing heart disease.  This cycle between the liver, adrenals and pancreas works very well when refined carbohydrates are consumed at a low rate.  The protective mechanism for when it is out of balance can only tolerate so much storage of excess insulin from the sugar highs and then the body stores it as fat, while exhausting the adrenals in the process.  It becomes a vicious cycle that is hard to get off of unless you manage the foods eaten and learn a new lifestyle.  The rewards are great with lots of energy and healthier heart.

This may sound a bit farfetched from what you hear on TV, but I have witnessed many people who have made dramatic leaps in their health and wellness by following a basic food plan of natural foods that feed our bodies.  America has become a nation of obese people who are literally starving to death from mal-nutrition.  We talk of health reform and health care, but find more and more nutritionally void foods in our super markets.  When are we going to wake up and take control and responsibility for our own health?

Did you know the heart is just a muscle?  A very, very important muscle, but a muscle none the less that responds quickly to proper nutrition and can rebuild.  It is not a complex organ that only gets help when a heart attack has occurred, but one that needs nutrients daily and can and will be responsive to nutritional therapy?  It is Heart Health month, what will you do to help your heart?  Will you take time to do some research?  Remember, some of the best research was done in the early 1900’s when vitamins were first isolated and before they were synthesized in a lab.  Or go to research outside of America who still believes in the importance of vitamins in their natural food state, not isolated and man-made in high doses.  A few research places I trust are the Weston A. Price Foundation, International Foundation for Nutritional Health, and pioneers like Dr. Melvin Page and Dr. Royal Lee.

Don’t miss the mark on your heart health this year, seriously consider having a personal consultation with Rhonda or having an ASYRA testing done that can help determine nutritional deficiencies and get you on a healthier path to wellness..

5 Things to Do to Care For Yourself This Winter

As I write this, there is about 12 inches of fresh snow on the ground outside.  The birds have been flocking around the feeder all morning.  I think how grateful they probably feel that there is a full feeder of their favorite seeds; a little extra care for them on this cold wintry day.

Our lives can feel a little cold like the day outside during this time of year too.  Weather is unpredictable and plans can get changed so quickly.  Schedules and appointments can be hard to keep with crazy road conditions which sometimes makes us feel more vulnerable and not in control!  Comfort food keeps us feeling a bit more ourselves…until the extra weight starts packing on!  Deep inside, we just want someone to do something special for us and make us feel special.  I think February is the perfect month for Valentine’s Day to be for this reason alone!

As I it here, I’m thinking of some simple, easy things to do to help you through this long winter, even though it is a mild one overall.  A few extra little seeds you can find in your life like the birds are fining outside.

  1. Cook Some Soup!  Use a crock-pot or do it in the oven so it doesn’t even need stirred!  Soup can be a very healthy comfort food and it makes your life easier.  Make a BIG pot so it lasts several meals.  You won’t have to think about what you’re serving for dinner for a few days and clean up is very easy!  Some of my favorites are Beef Vegetable, Chicken Noodle, Sausage Green Bean, and Chili of course!
  2. Have a Movie or Game Night! Invite a few friends in or just have your family all together.  Make some healthy snacks and enjoy some good fun for the night.  You can even have a sleep over in the living room for this to make it extra special!
  3. Eat Healthier In Just a Couple Ways! You’ve had a few resolutions that maybe haven’t been the easiest.  Resolve to just eat a bit healthier so you feel less sluggish.  Give up coffee and milk, or maybe decrease to only 1 cup a day.  Do not eat any processed foods for one week and see if you think clearer and feel less bloated.  Find a healthy snack like apple slices and almond butter, or celery sticks with veggie yogurt.
  4. Supplement! Make sure you’re getting at least 5000i.u. of Vitamin D during these months and get a good, whole food multi vitamin as the minimum.  Come in and get an ASYRA consultation, it is an easy way to find the top 4 supplements your body needs right now for wellness.  There’s no guessing; the skin galvanic response testing does all the work while you sit there and hold a metal cylinder!  I have had this done and it has made a difference for me!  I love when it also recommends a diet because it shows beneficial foods, not just a no and yes column.  This gives you more power and control to make the BEST choices and not just OK ones.  It is a greater sense of being proactive in your health and wellbeing.
  5. Get a Massage! This is such a simple thing to do for yourself.  There’s not an easier way to feel being cared for, relaxing and even calmer with a brighter outlook afterwards!

We are here to help you at Natural Options.  Come in and ask questions, we care for you!  We have those golden seeds on the ground to help nourish you through this long winter!

Who Doesn't Love Bath & Body Care?

Most of you are probably thinking to yourselves that you have enough bath and body care products in your home already.  However, I spent the morning outside planting flowers in the 90 degree heat and sat there and realized that the sweat from the heat of the day was taking a toll on my skin.  Not to be gross, but we all sweat and it’s hard not to, when the temperatures are so high this summer.  Our bodies have to replenish what we lose, and we have just the solution for you!

As a natural health store, we strive to give you new and exciting options in keeping your skin healthy and clean.  Sweating can cause break-outs if it sits on your skin for long periods of time.  Although it is healthy to sweat, it is important to cleanse impurities from your skin.  Natural Options is excited to announce their new Bath & Body Bar.  This new addition will provide you with specialty bath salts and hand-cut soaps.  Bath salts are essential in the journey to wellness because our bodies can lose nutrients through various things that happen in our daily lives.  How many baths have you taken in your lifetime?  To be honest, I am not a person that would prefer a bath over a shower however with these types of products I am persuaded to change my mind.  Bath salts are becoming more popular because of the health benefits that you can receive through them.  Salt therapy is an effective treatment because it assists in the rejuvenation of cells and induces an exchange of minerals and toxins between blood and water.  Salts can help the immune system by becoming defensive against bacteria.  I can personally admit that I have a low immune system so this would be a product that I should use.  Salts help your endocrine system by recovering from low responsiveness due to daily stress.  Skin allergies can also be alleviated through the use of bath salts because they give an antiseptic effect to the skin.  Ok, hopefully I am not boring you but this information is important to understand.  Most people in general use bath salts and hand-cut soaps for the relaxation of it and that is perfectly ok!  Bath salts and hand-cut soaps really are beneficial to use in terms of keeping your body healthy and happy.  They simply improve your skin’s look and feel, as well as giving you a radiant and healthy glow.
Using the power of nature to heal your body definitely says something.  Next time you are about to take a bath think about trying a bath salt to improve and rejuvenate your skin.  These products will leave your skin smooth and soft because of the natural ingredients.  Being healthy is a choice that you personally make towards creating a better life for yourself.  I mean who doesn’t love a new bath and body product to try?

Why Choose Natural Options for a Massage?

Whether it be for relaxation or pain management, massage therapy has been proven beneficial for many reasons.  I bet most of you would agree that life is stressful.  We all get caught up in everyday living and we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves.  That said, why shouldn’t you treat yourself to a massage this summer?

Natural Options has been providing massage since 2001 when Rhonda first had her business in her home and then eventually moved down to Broad Street in Grove City.  The term “massage therapy” includes many techniques and the type of massage given depends on your needs and condition.  Natural Options is proud to say that we offer something a little different and unique compared to others.  We offer Therapeutic Massages which means that our massages will make you feel good as well as relieve pain that you may be having.  Not only that, but massage therapy has been known to alleviate such things as low back pain, arthritis, fatigue, high blood pressure, diabetes, infertility, depression, and more.  Our bodies can build up and produce unhealthy hormones during various activities throughout our lives.  For example, being stuck in traffic and trying to meet a deadline at work can both cause our bodies to build-up these unhealthy hormones.  After a massage at Natural Options, most people say that they have seen decreased anxiety in their life, enhanced sleep quality, greater energy, increased circulation, and reduced fatigue.  It is not uncommon to hear people leaving the store extremely satisfied with their results and how they feel.  Our therapist Joe is always willing to take the time to figure out your specific needs so that you get the most out of your massage.  Massage therapy can benefit you no matter what if you just give it a try!  Here’s a few questions to ask yourself in helping you to decide whether or not a massage would benefit you:

  1. Do you have migraines frequently?
  2. Do you suffer from low back pain that causes discomfort?
  3. Have you had a history of depression and anxiety?
  4. Do you have stress in your life?
  5. Are your muscles tired?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, massage therapy is a way to better yourself in terms of your health.  However, you can also just use massage therapy for relaxation.  Massage is one of the few things that you can do to significantly improve your health and well-being.  I hope that you take my advice and at least stop in to talk to one of our therapists! Massage therapy could be the right path for you!

The Benefits of Bath Salts

Our NEW Bath & Body Bar features many different types of bath salts.  Each type of bath salt can benefit you in a different way.  So why are bath salts healthy for your body?

At Natural Options we offer you unrefined salts which have all the needed minerals that occur naturally in the sea, compared to what you can buy in regular stores.  Our Epsom salt is special because of that and has numerous health benefits.  The benefits can include things such as soothing the mind, body, and soul.  To be more specific, these bath salts can cure skin problems, soothe back pain, relieve tension in the muscles, treat colds & congestion, relax the nervous system, and draw toxins from the body.  Their benefits stretch far beyond looking beautiful and smelling great, even though that is a plus!  The minerals and nutrients within bath salts can keep your skin smooth, soft, and supple.  Bath salts benefit not only your skin but your entire body because those minerals are easily absorbed into our pores to cleanse and purify our skin on a molecular level.  Our Bath & Body Bar features 8 different types of bath salts with essential oils that you can choose from!  Each different type of bath salt has a different purpose for your body.  For example, our Muscle Soak focuses on relieving tension in your muscles.  Our Cold & Flu Vitamin Soak will help to treat the common cold or flu because it contains antioxidants and Vitamin C.  See, bath salts can be very healthy for you!
We suggest that you use bath salts three times a week and put them into a warm bath.  In order to get the full effect of a bath salt, it is highly suggested to soak for at least 12 minutes.  After 12 minutes, you should be feeling pretty great!  Not only that but you will also be helping your body in its journey to wellness!

Shake it Up!

Are you someone who lacks in protein and fiber in your diet?  You need to try Super Shake.

Super Shake is a protein powder that will work for you because it can provide a low carbohydrate meal replacement option that is free from most common allergens.  Not only that, but Super Shake can provide you the energy you need while working out or post-workout.  Super Shake has key ingredients (protein sources) in it such as pea, rice, and pumpkin.  The coolest thing about these protein shakes is that they are gluten, dairy, and soy free!  I know some of you might be really excited about that if you can’t tolerate these such things.  And I can personally tell you that these really work!  So what makes this different than other protein powders, you ask?  Super Shake provides you with a variety of amino acids, including 9 out of the 10 essential ones.  Super Shake also contains Fibersol -2 which is a soluble fiber that should be in most of your diets to keep your body healthy.  Now if you are the type of person who works-out on a regular basis (which should be most of us) then this protein powder can benefit you pre or post-workout.  Super Shake contains 19-24 grams of protein giving you exactly the energy that you need!  It is proven to also be a meal replacement option, which I mentioned above and it really does work.

Super Shake comes in many flavors such as Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon Swirl, Strawberry Banana, Vanilla, Naked, and more!  Naked is an unflavored protein powder for those of you who want full control over what to add to your Super Shake, in terms of ingredients and flavor!  Here is a recipe that I recommend to you:

Apple Pie Pre-Workout Smoothie:

1 cup cold, cooked oatmeal

1 apple, cut up in large chunks

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1-3 scoops of Vanilla Super Shake Protein Powder

1-2 packets of Stevia, depending on sweetness

⅔ cup water

It will really put you in the mood for fall!  In all seriousness though, this is something that is really healthy for you if you are somebody who needs the extra protein and fiber in your diet.  If you try Super Shake Protein Powder, you will never go back!

Why Your New Years Resolution May Depend on Doing a Cleanse

It’s the beginning of a new year, how will this year be different for you and your health?  What are some challenges you see on your horizon already?  Challenges can also be opportunities if you face them with an open mind to see beyond the negative to the positive that always accompanies it.  Maybe you’re facing surgery of some kind.  How can you prepare your body for the best outcome?  What can you do with nutrition after the surgery when your body is healing?  Make a plan that works and work your plan.

How do you rate your overall wellbeing from last year?  If there is one area you want to improve, what would it be?  Would you like to lose weight, how about your energy level, what is your cardiovascular history or maybe your digestion is slow and you feel bloated a lot of the time.  What was the first most important area that popped into your mind as you read these questions?  Think about that area and where would you like to be?  What would your life look like?  It may be possible to achieve that.  What are the steps you need to take to make that life your reality?

There are many programs available and the ads will tell you just what you want to hear, but is it really right for you?  Billions of dollars are spent each year on nutritional supplements and most people decide what to buy according to ads of those selling them!  Of course they tell you it’s easy and it’s just what you need!  When you are looking to regain well-being, it is always helpful to educate yourself and look for support from those who are living the life needed for regaining health and wellness.  We have more access to instant information than any other generation has ever had, but you need to know the source.  At the same time, I truly believe we have a responsibility to take our health in our own hands and be accountable for ourselves and our family. It is sad sometimes how much we must be our own best advocate for our health.

The road back to well-being can be quite bumpy and if you’re not prepared or have someone helping you through, it is tough to stick it out to regain your health.  Healing crises are the biggest bumps on that road; times when your body feels terrible for a short period of time while it heals.  It takes more energy to heal than to maintain as it is.  The fatigue can be overwhelming and misunderstood and cause you to give up or revert back to unhealthy choices.  These are important times to communicate with those who have been there that can guide you through it to renewed health.  Healing crises can come from the addition of high quality nutrients that fill a void or even more so when the body is given the chance to detoxify from long buried toxins and stress.  Due to increased stressful lives which increases cortisol levels, our bodies tend to hide toxic wastes in fat deep within the abdomen where unfortunately can be most deadly

Americans have become so obese and yet are starving nutritionally.  It is a sad state in which we find ourselves.  Our foods are nutritionally deficient or have so many toxic additives, preservatives and pesticides that our bodies are not in the greatest of health.  This increased toxic build-up is posing a physical crisis itself in our bodies.  Many times even taking high quality supplements can be hindered by a toxic, plugged bowel that can’t get the nutrients out of the supplements before also absorbing the toxic wastes of dried fecal material.  When you think about the road to health, the first stops needed include a good plan for body detoxification and drinking more pure, alkaline water.

There are many natural options available to nurture and energize the body to release toxic overload.  This is where it is wise to seek the advice of people who have studied body detoxification and know what signs and questions to ask in order to guide you on the path best for you.  There are laxative-like programs that help move stool, but true cleansing means cleaning out the putrefied, dried stool stuck to the sides of the bowel.   This can be done herbally and then aided even more by colon hydrotherapy.   But is more fiber really what you need or will that make matters worse?  The answers to those kinds of questions will be what helps or hinders your progress.  There’s also other ways to help your body give up those nasty toxins like ionic foot soaks, infrared saunas, light therapy or even massage.  Some cleanse programs focus on the bowel while others may have a focus on the liver, gallbladder or kidneys.

As you can see, finding the “means” and the “how” to do whole body cleansing can be complicated to do yourself.  I do encourage you to come in a get an easy questionnaire we have that can help you see if you need to do a cleanse, what kind of cleanse you need, and it is also a way to evaluate how you feel today verses after you do a cleanse! Check into this and make a plan to give your body the best break it can have to greater health this coming year by ridding yourself of the toxic overload of our present society and lifestyles. Of course you should also learn how you can reduce excess toxic burden on your body too by modifying your current lifestyle.  If this seems a bit extreme or uncomfortable to read about, just be open-minded and research yourself.  A good book is I was Poisoned by My Body…I have a gut feeling you could be too! By Gloria Gilbere, N.D., D.A.Hom., pH.D.   This toxic overload can lead to these symptoms and diseases according to the author:  food allergies, chronic fatigue arthritis, autoimmune disorders, digestive disorders, heartburn, acid reflux, liver dysfunction, muscle pains, migraines, colon disorders, anaphylaxis, candidiasis (yeast overgrowth), gluten intolerance, environmental illness, and many more.

An over burdened liver and colon just may be the reason you have had the same New Year’s Resolution for many years in a row to lose weight.  Studies have shown doing a whole body detoxifying cleanse can jump start any weight loss program.  Let’s face the New Year with the resolution of truly leaving the old year behind and all the toxic burdens that it and all previous years have dealt you.  I promise you will feel different when done right and you will love doing it time and time again the rest of your life.

Summer Stress Relief

August is here, summer is almost over and where has it gone? I remember an old saying about the “lazy, dog days of summer” and I ask where have they gone? Where are the quiet, relaxed days of summer; enjoying picnics and family walks from years ago?

Our lives continue to accelerate and are filled with many things – good things, but many things nonetheless. I have heard much talk about wanting the fall to come, to get back into a routine, and to rest up from a fun-filled full summer. It seems no matter what time of year, we continue to pack our schedules and add stress to them by trying to keep up at the expense of these summer fun times. We still only have 24 hours in a day, so why do we think we can keep adding things and not let other things go to make up for the time the new thing takes? Time has become the most valuable commodity we have.

This is the pattern we are teaching our children: go, go, go! Americans are so stressed. Employers are spending countless extra dollars in lost work time and productivity due to tiredness of their employees. The employees are losing money by missing work many times due to the result of being overly-stressed and tired, which bring on a plethora of health issues, many of which can become chronic and debilitating. The tiredness and stress go hand in hand as our minds continue to flow at such a rate that we have a hard time relaxing and are irritable with our co-workers, friends, and families. Is this really how you want to spend your days and be remembered by your loved ones?

Your time, for the most part, is under your control; manage it or it will manage you.  There are many self-help books about time management, but the end result is in actually applying the knowledge and starting to say “no” when necessary. When saying “no” more often, you can say “yes” to family time to relax. How long has it been since you’ve just sat and talked as a family or played a game? What about heading up to Presque Isle and walking along the trail or the beach? Did you know they have free concerts every Wednesday night?  What about our local Moraine State Park or even the movies hosted down town in Festival Park? It doesn’t have to cost money to have a good time, relax, and meet friends. Communication is very therapeutic. Do you take time to talk to your spouse each day? Have a cup of organic coffee or tea and just relax and talk.  Doing a nice foot massage afterwards is a great way to relax the entire body also.

Stress is still the number one underlying cause for most illnesses. Our immune systems were designed to keep us alive and they have a “fight or flight” response when stress is high and our bodies need extra protection, knowing that it can recuperate itself when the danger is over and rest is restored. The problem today is that we hardly ever get to the part of restoration and our immune system is stressed and can’t keep up. The only time our bodies truly restore and heal is during deep delta wave sleep which our body cycles in and out of about 5 times a night. How many of you are sleeping all night long (6-8 hours) and feeling refreshed in the morning? Or is your mind (stress) keeping you from getting to sleep and then even waking you up in the middle of the night because it won’t stop? Do you ever notice how much larger problems seem in the dark of the night compared to when you think about them in the middle of the day? How do you feel in the morning: refreshed and ready for the day, or tired and exhausted, dreading the day?  Just take a minute to really evaluate your lifestyle.

I encourage you to look at your schedules and manage them. Rate every entry on the importance it has to what your priorities in life are and then delete some and keep others. Now there will still be times when you get stressed and you need to make it a priority to take care of yourself during those times. Other things need to be done on a regular basis in order for your body to handle life with its ups and downs.  There are many things you can do that have been proven to help. I will list a few to think upon:

Massage

Relaxation, therapeutic massage has been known for hundred of years to reduce stress while improving immune function.  The more often it is done, the better impact it has on the body.  Table massage is the most effective, but even a 15 minute seated massage goes a long way in handling the effects of stress on our bodies.  Call to make your appointment with Charlene or Joe!

Supplements

Calm Day: A blend of herbs and Vitamin B complex to supplement the body’s needs during stress. Stress depletes Vitamin B reserves.

Cataplex B: A whole food Vitamin B complex that replaces those vitamins used up with stress – and it’s great for your heart too!

Min Tran: A blend of calming minerals taken before bed can help ease the mind and help get that good night’s rest.

Sleep Time: We need 6-8 hours of good rest a night for the body to restore and rebuild.  Increased stress keeps this from happening. This a great supplement to help people fall asleep and stay asleep for a full restorative night’s sleep!

Lifestyle

Food: Our body can heal or be stressed and inflamed by what we feed it.  Learn what makes the difference. We can help with this by an individual evaluations.

TV Fast:  Turn it off and turn on family time or get that little project under way that you’ve been putting off. You’ll feel so much better having it done and not just sitting there waiting for you! Projects are great family times, too – with the satisfaction of a job well done.

There are many ways to help keep your life and schedules manageable; you just need to be proactive in determining what it is you need and then do it.  Summer times are fun times, so please make time to eat healthy, to be healthy, and to connect with friends and family.  When summer is done, do you want to look back and say “Gee, I’m glad I spent so much time at the office,” or will you say, “I am so glad we took the time to make memories and relax while the weather and our schedules permitted it!” The choice continues to be up to each of us and it’s also up to us to teach the next generation.
